  • A wood stove with a flat top that gets hot.
Good to know
  • A gentle breeze, not a box fan. It moves the warm air off the stove top out into the room. You'll feel it best in the same room as the stove.
  • For wood stoves with a flat top that gets hot. It's not for gas or electric heaters or open fireplaces, and it usually won't do much on pellet stoves, propane heaters, most fireplace inserts or a low fire.
  • It needs a hot stove top to turn. On a cold stove it stays still. As the stove top warms up it starts on its own, and it slows down and stops as the stove cools.
  • It doesn't make heat. Your stove does the heating.
  • The blades and the base get very hot. Keep children and pets away from it, and let it cool, or use a glove, before you move it.
  • Keep an eye on the thermometer. A stove top that runs too hot can damage the fan. The highest temperature for the fan is printed in the instructions in the box. The thermometer is a rough guide, not an exact reading.
  • If a blade arrives bent, send us a photo. We'll send a new fan or refund you, and you don't send it back.
  • Follow the instructions in the box for where to set it on your stove.

The why

What it does, and why

How it works

The base of the fan sits on the hot stove top. A small module inside it turns some of that heat into a little electricity, just enough to spin the blades. There's nothing to plug in and no battery to change. The hotter the stove top, the faster it turns. It pushes the warm air that rises off the stove out into the room, instead of leaving it to collect around the stove.

Why a thermometer comes with it

The magnetic thermometer sits on the stove top and gives you a quick look at how hot it's running. A fire that burns too cool makes more smoke and creosote, and a stove top that runs too hot can damage the stove and the fan. Chapter 3 of the Winter-Ready House guide, "Wood That Burns Hot," covers the stove and the chimney.

From the guide

Three tips from Chapter 3 of the Winter-Ready House guide, "Wood That Burns Hot."

  • "Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from the stove: chairs, curtains, the wood box, the kindling basket."

  • "Have the chimney inspected every year, before the burning season, and cleaned when the sweep says it needs it."

  • "Let the ashes cool, then put them in a metal can with a tight lid, and set it outside at least 10 feet from the house."

Questions about the stove fan

Can't find yours? Write to . We reply within 6 hours, Monday to Friday, 9 am–5 pm Eastern.

Does it need a cord or batteries?

No. It runs on the heat from the top of your wood stove.

Will it work on my stove?

It's made for free-standing wood stoves with a flat top that gets hot. It usually won't do much on pellet stoves, propane heaters (like a Buddy heater), most fireplace inserts or a low fire, because their tops don't get hot enough. It's not for gas or electric heaters or open fireplaces. Not sure about yours? Write to , tell us what stove you have (a photo helps), and we'll give you a straight answer before you buy.

When does it start turning?

Once the stove top is hot. On a cold stove it stays still. As the stove warms up, it starts on its own, and it slows down and stops as the stove cools.

Does it heat the house?

No. Your stove does the heating. The fan moves the warm air from the top of the stove out into the room. Think of it as a gentle breeze, not a box fan: you'll feel it best in the same room as the stove.

It's turning slowly, or not at all. Why?

That usually means the stove top isn't hot enough yet. Give the fire a few more minutes and look at the thermometer. The hotter the stove top, the faster the fan turns. If it still won't turn on a hot stove, write to and we'll make it right.

Is the thermometer exact?

No, it's a rough guide. It gives you a quick look at how hot the stove top is running, so you can tell a slow fire from a stove that's getting too hot.

A blade arrived bent. What do I do?

Send a photo to within 30 days of delivery. We'll send you a new fan or refund you, whichever you prefer. You don't need to send the bent one back.

How long does shipping take?

You can. Ours comes as a set with a magnetic stove thermometer, our printable big-print Woodpile card and the 46-page Winter-Ready House guide, plus a real person on email and a 30-day refund you don't have to mail back.
